Sadiq
brokers meeting between Tesco and local retailers
The announcement that a new Tesco Express is due to open in
Tooting, this time on Mitcham Road, has been met with
concern from several local retailers and residents. Some
local residents are worried about the increased traffic
congestion the new store may generate, and are equally
concerned about what the arrival of the store may do to the
diversity of local businesses.
Sadiq Khan MP is working with both Tesco Head Office and
local retailers to achieve a satisfactory outcome for all
parties. It is important that local shops can still trade
successfully whilst Tesco can, at the same time, provide a
further service for local people, many of whom welcome its
arrival to the area.
Action by Sadiq
Over the summer local business owners on Mitcham Road
collected a petition of more than 700 signatures opposing
the opening of Tesco. They asked their local MP to present
the petition to Tesco on their behalf.
Sadiq arranged a meeting with representatives from Tesco to
discuss the new store on Mitcham Road, including its impact
on traffic congestion, local retailers and also the prospect
of regeneration for the local area.
Following this, Sadiq arranged for a further meeting between
Tesco, the local retailers who organised the petition and
Tooting’s Town Centre Manager, in order to open the
communication channels between the groups and discover ways
in which they can work together.
Sadiq has previously opened the Tesco Express store on
Upper Tooting Road and is confident that the positive
affects it has had, and the good working relationship with
other local traders will be recreated on Mitcham Road.
