What Sadiq has been doing in
Parliament to oppose the cuts
The cuts
represents the Conservative
Council’s preference for cutting cost over maintaining our
cultural heritage.
Sadiq has
raised this matter in Prime Minister’s Question's. His question and the answer from Tony Blair
is set out below:
“My right hon. Friend will know of the massive investment in
our museums and galleries that has led to millions of new
visitors. In the light of that, will he comment on the
decision by the London borough of Wandsworth, only nine
months after council elections at which it remained silent
on the subject, to close the very popular Wandsworth museum
and threaten Battersea arts centre with closure? Is that not
an example of a
Tory
council choosing cuts over cultural heritage”?
Tony Blair: “Let me add to what my hon. Friend has said by
pointing out that we have substantially increased the grant
to
local
government. There is absolutely no cause for the
closure of museums and arts centres that perform such a good
local role. And of course it is this Government, as a result
of our policy of free entry to museums, who have enabled
literally millions more visitors, including children, to go
to museums. My hon. Friend has given a telling example of
the difference between the values of a
Labour Government and those of a
Tory
Government.”

Battersea MP Martin Linton, the Wandsworth Labour Group of
Councillors and Sadiq are doing all they can to prevent such
a loss to Wandsworth.
sadiq and
martin have presented 2 separate Early
Day Motions to the House of Commons about the closures,
which have now received cross party support.
Unfortunately Putney Conservative MP, Justine Greening, has
refused to sign either EDM’s.

Sadiq says: "We
will continue to work with local residents, groups and
schools to campaign against these closures and to ask others
to join our campaign.
your
support is essential if we are to be successful in our
campaigns to stop the Tory Council decision".
