Sadiq hosts 'e-news' reception

Tooting residents were given a chance to grill their Cabinet Ministers at a special reception in the House of Commons this week. 

Over 150 residents, including representatives from local schools, businesses, charities and the fire service, packed out the Jubilee Room in the Houses of Parliament. 

Sadiq Khan had organised the reception for subscribers to his weekly email bulletin, which keeps Tooting residents up to date with his work in Parliament and in Tooting.

Special guests at the reception included the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears MP, the Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw MP and Dawn Butler, Member of Parliament for Brent South.

Sadiq enjoys the Tooting Foodival...

Sadiq recently attended Tooting's first 'Foodival' run with Transition Town Tooting.

Transition Town Tooting will explore how the people of Tooting can look at the twin challenges of climate change and energy use, with an emphasis on focusing on localisation and the reduction of carbon emissions.

 

Sadiq is made Minister for Community Cohesion...

Sadiq has been promoted to Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of his government reshuffle. 

Though the specifics of Sadiq’s portfolio are still being finalised with his ministerial team it is understood he will have special responsibility for community cohesion and the fire service. 


Sadiq helps Tidy up Tooting...

Sadiq recently joined Tooting's very own Big Tidy Up group to help clean up a neglected alley off Mitcham Road in Graveney Ward.

20th anniversary of St Alban's Church...

New astroturf for Chestnut Grove School

Sadiq was delighted to be asked to open Chestnut Grove's new 3G astroturf pitch, which will be available to the wider community in Balham as well as students at the school.  

The pitch was funded by a grant from the Football Foundation, an organisation set up by Labour to increase grassroots participation in football, and jointly funded by the government, FA, Premier League and Sport England.    

Sadiq met with students and teachers before opening the new pitch and having a kick-about with the extremely happy pupils.

Bike tagging

Sadiq  pitched in to help combat bike crime with Nightingale Safer Neighbourhood Team recently at a bike tagging event in Tooting.

Bike tagging events like these will show bike thieves that local residents are clued up and provide a deterrent to local bike thieves. Getting your own bike tagged will mean that if your bike is ever stolen, when the police find it, it can be identified and returned to you.

Wandsworth Carers

Sadiq was delighted to host the Wandsworth Carers Alliance at the House of Commons recently.  The group enjoyed a tour of both Houses before meeting with Sadiq and quizzing him on some of the issues they are concerned about as carers.

West Side Church Barbecue...

As part of the follow-up to a residents meeting held at West Side Church in June (in response to the antisocial behaviour issues in our area), the church hosted a barbecue on Sunday 14 September.  The afternoon gave residents a chance to meet and socialise and discuss issues that affected their area.

Sadiq has been working to tackle anti-social behaviour around the church, and was delighted to spend the afternoon meeting the residents who were benefiting the work he had done. 

21st anniversary of Balham Pensioners Centre...

At the beginning of September Sadiq attended the annual day of celebration for Balham Pensioners Centre, at Balham Baptist Church. 

Sadiq attended the special thanksgiving service at Balham Baptist church where the theme was “Celebrating Age”.

 

Furzedown Project AGM

In September Sadiq attended the AGM of the Furzedown Project. 

This Activity Day Centre for Older People continues to go from strength to strength.  Sadiq met some of the members and volunteers who continue to increase the amount of time they give to the Centre. The estimate of hours contributed by volunteers last year was 3,331 hours! 

 

BATCA cricket competition

Sadiq also attended the BATCA (Balham and Tooting Community Association) cricket competition this weekend.

The event was a brilliant advert for BATCA and its success at bringing people in Balham and Tooting together to have fun and make new friends.  It catered to all ages and levels of cricketing ability, with coaching for novices and a tournament for the experts. 

For the second year running the final was won by Russellmania, a team from Russell’s DIY shop on Upper Tooting Road. 

Tooting Chariot Festival

Sadiq celebrates the Hindu Chariot Festival in Tooting with Councillor Billie Randall and Councillor Rex Osborn. 

Now in it's 8th year, Sadiq joined hundreds of local residents on a walk from Sivayagum to Figges Marsh on the August Bank Holiday.    


More 'bobbies on the beat' for Tooting...

Sadiq's campaign for more investment in community policing, and getting even more ‘bobbies back on the beat’ paid off this week when the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, visited the Community Policing Contact Centre in Tooting this week to announce new investment. 

The Special Constabulary is to be boosted by 6,000 new constables over the next three years and will receive an addition £2.25 million funding package to be spent on the recruitment and training of ‘Specials’.   

Sadiq volunteers in Sierra Leone...

Sadiq spent the first 8 days of recess working in Sierra Leone with the VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas).

He spent most of his time working with the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR) which is a human rights group doing crucial work in improving local democracy, raising awareness of human rights and in particular work with women and young girls.

Sadiq runs to Help a London Child... 

Inspired by visits to sports day at many schools recently - and the impending Olympic Games! - Sadiq proved it's not just Tooting's schoolchildren and elite athletes who can produce excellent performances on the running track. 

Sadiq finished the 10K Great Capital Run in 50 minutes 51 seconds, coming 1791th out of over 11,000 runners.

The event raised thousands of pounds for Help a London Child, which provides grants organisations which help thousands of disadvantaged and vulnerable children throughout the city. 

 

Tiffin Cup success for Tooting...

Sadiq has congratulated local restaurant Al Mirage for their excellent performance in the annual 'Tiffin Cup'; a national competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK. 

Though they did not make the final, Al Mirage were highly commended, and Sadiq visited the restaurant to present the head chef with new chef whites, complete with the Tiffin Cup logo, in recognition of the restaurant's excellent cuisine.

 

 

Sadiq attends Charity Sports Day...

Sadiq recently attended the White Pigeon Sports Day, which continues to go from strength to strength.

White Pigeon is a local charity that raises money for orphanages in Sri Lanka.

This year more than 150 young people took part in the annual event at Tooting Bec Athletics Track. In addition to watching the young athletes complete, Sadiq was given the task of handing out medals and certificates to the winners.

Sadiq hosts Local Transport Forum with Ruth Kelly...

In July Sadiq hosted a transport forum for Tooting residents with the Secretary of State for Transport, Ruth Kelly MP.

The forum, which was held in the House of Commons, was well attended by Tooting residents, and allowed them to grill the Secretary of State on transport policy and what was being done to improve transport in Tooting. 

 

Olympic fever reaches Tooting's Schools...

Sadiq had a double dose of Olympic fun this week, with visits to both Sellincourt and Earlsfield Schools to watch their own versions of the Olympics. 

Both events showcased the Olympic spirit, with teams competing in a very sporting manner, cheering from the sidelines, and brilliant opening displays. 

The students excelled themselves and produced some colourful displays of flags and costumes in their opening ceremonies. 
 


Sadiq takes on reading challenge...

Sadiq has agreed to take part in the MP Summer Reading Challenge, sponsored by the National Literacy Trust, by reading books by top children's authors over the summer recess. 

The 2008 Summer Reading Challenge aims to keep over 650,000 young people reading over their summer holiday. 

The most popular books chosen through surveys of 16 schools, including Earlsfield Primary School in Tooting, were presented to the MPs at the reception.

The books chosen in the survey were presented by a small delegation of young people from Earlsfield Primary School, who were joined by the children's author Francesca Simon. 

The students that took part in the survey believe that all politicians should read the books they chose in order to better understand the lives and concerns of a young person today.

Sadiq volunteers with the VSO...

Sadiq Khan will be spending some time over the summer recess volunteering with the international development charity VSO in Sierra Leone. He is taking part in VSO’s Project PolVol which will see 11 MPs from the UK spending time volunteering their skills in the developing world this summer.

In Sierra Leone Sadiq will be sharing his skills and experiences as a leading human rights lawyer at the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights, helping them to improve their para-legal and advocacy work.

Tooting NHS Walk-In Centre is getting bigger...

Tooting's NHS Walk-In Centre is being refurbished and expanded, and will soon be offering an even better service to the 160+ patients it see everyday.

Walk-in centres offer fast and convenient access to a range of NHS services, including:

  • Treatment for minor illnesses (coughs, colds, infections) and injuries (strains, sprains, cuts)
     
  • Advice on how to stay healthy
     
  • Information on local NHS services
     
  • Emergency contraception

Tooting Walk-in Centre is open from 7am till 10pm.

Sadiq presents awards to South Thames College students...

Last week Sadiq visited South Thames College in Tooting Broadway to hand out certificates to all those students who had successfully completed various ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) and carers course at the College.

The morning was a huge success with hundreds of proud parents, husbands (all but one graduate was a woman!) and children expressing real pride in the achievements of their family member. One of the biggest challenges we have as a society is raising the skills base of the general population and potential employees. South Thames does a great job in giving women a real chance to improve their own life chances as well as their families by the wide choice of access and more advanced courses offered.

 

 

Charity 'ambulance pull' buys new equipment for children's unit at St George's Hospital...

Sadiq was extremely pleased to present a cheque for £3511 to the paediatric intensive care unit at St George's Hospital this week.

The money had been raised by local emergency services volunteers in a sponsored 'ambulance pull' at the recent Balham and Tooting Community Association fun day.

The raised money will be enough to purchase a portable ultrasound machine, which will make it easier for medical staff to treat very young patients more effectively by allowing them to locate veins in young children that conventional ultrasound equipment cannot.  

Sadiq would like to thank all those who took part in this potentially lifesaving fundraising effort.  

 

 


Sadiq meets the Foreign Secretary...


Sadiq, who will be travelling to Sierra Leone with the VSO this summer to help with development work, also took the opportunity to raise a number of issues which are of importance to Tooting constituents and which he is particularly concerned about.  These included the ongoing problems in Zimbabwe, the war in Iraq, the conflict in Sri Lanka and the status of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.  

 

 

 


Great fun at the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BACTA) fun day...

This weekend Sadiq attended the BACTA fun day, hosted by Gatton School and St Augustine's Church, which Sadiq enjoyed enormously.

This year's event saw a sponsored 'ambulance pull' - which saw local emergency services pull an ambulance from St George's Hospital through the streets of Tooting to earn money for the St George's Hospital Charity. 

Sadiq celebrated their fundraising efforts with the Imam from Balham Mosque, the Bishop of Kingston, the Mayor of Wandsworth John Farebrother, the head of Gatton School, Mrs Safia Basith, and volunteers from the local emergency services who were all involved in the charity event. 

 


Sadiq says Happy Birthday NHS...

As part of the NHS’s 60th Birthday celebrations Sadiq Khan MP visited staff and patients at St George’s hospital.   He presented the staff with a giant card to thank them for their hard work. 

On Monday 14TH July, Sadiq met and talked with staff and patients to celebrate the 60th anniversary, and as a token of gratitude from the local community, he presented the staff with a giant ‘Happy Birthday NHS’ card, signed by local residents.   

Sadiq also took the opportunity to meet with the Trust’s Chief Executive David Astley to discuss the ongoing improvements being made to local services. 
 


Sadiq receives IPT honour...

Sadiq has been a fellow of the Industry and Parliament Trust for his work in fostering understanding between business and parliament.

The IPT is a not-for-profit, non-lobbying group based in Whitehall which seeks to build relationships and understanding between business and Parliament. 

Sadiq completed his 18 day Fellowship with the publisher Reed Elsevier, which specialises in health and science information.

BME Cancer Awareness week...

7th-13th July is the first ever BME Cancer Awareness week.

Sadiq hosted a reception in the House of Commons and officially launched the week, which aims to highlight the disproportionate numbers of people from ethnic minorities who suffer from various forms of cancer. 

Guest speakers at the event included Sir Trevor McDonald OBE and Dr Ian Gibson MP (both pictured with Sadiq) as well as Health Minister Ann Keen and radio presenter Eddie Nestor.

Sadiq hits the streets with London Young Labour...

60 years and going strong...

Sadiq has been celebrating 60 years of the NHS.  As part of the celebrations he met Health Secretary Alan Johnson to discuss improvements to Tooting's health service. 

 


Sadiq celebrates local college...

South Thames College is an excellent Further Education (FE) college which does a great job giving people a second chance to learn, as well as providing practical skills which improve the quality of life and prospects of many Tooting residents.  As a former Governor, Sadiq was really pleased to host a reception and celebrate the role South Thames has played in developing skills for individuals, employers and the economy.
 


Sadiq wins road safety award...

Sadiq Khan MP has been named Parliamentarian of the Month by Brake, the national road safety charity, for his work in improving road safety in Tooting. 

Sadiq’s Safer Streets campaign has seen him working closely with parents, teachers and local councillors to improve road safety around a number of schools in Tooting. 

Every month, Brake recognises the commitment of MPs and Lords to road safety by selecting a Parliamentarian of the Month. The monthly winners are short-listed for Brake’s Parliamentarian of the Year Awards for an ‘Outstanding Contribution to Road Safety’.

Ed Balls visit Tooting School...

Local MP Sadiq Khan and Secretary of State for Children, Families and Schools, Rt Hon Ed Balls MP visited Graveney School on Monday 16th June to see first-hand what the government’s record investment is doing to improve schools in Tooting.

Sadiq and the Ed Balls met students and teachers at the school to discuss the exciting plans Graveney will soon be putting into action as part of the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

The programme guarantees that all secondary schools in Wandsworth will be refurbished or remodelled. 

 


Sadiq congratulate earthquake hero...

Sadiq Khan MP visited Fircroft Primary School and held a special assembly to congratulate James Pang, aged 9 and present him
with a special award and certificate for his idea which helped raise over £1000 for survivors of the recent earthquake in China.

James, whose family originally came from China, was extremely upset by the earthquake in China, and decided he wanted to do something to help those who had been affected by it.

He brought this to the attention of his school by writing a letter to the Head and Deputy Head.  The teachers were impressed by James’ letter and helped him organise a Red Clothes day to raise money for the victims of the earthquake.
 


Sadiq celebrates 60th anniversary of NHS with
Tooting volunteers...

To mark Volunteers Week and also the 60th anniversary of the founding of the National Heath Service, Sadiq Khan MP took three volunteers from local health services to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, held a special reception for NHS volunteers to thank them for their commitment and generosity.  The volunteers were personally thanked by Gordon Brown and Sarah Brown and the Health Minister Ann Keen.  

Sadiq’s guests for the reception were Daniel Blagdon from Millennium Volunteers Wandsworth, Kiron Kurien, a member of numerous local patient liaison groups including Expert Patients Programme (EPP) and Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Steering Group for Wandsworth PCT and Chris Lewis, a “buddy” and fundraiser for St George’s Hospital.

 

 


Sadiq has demanded a review of Post Office Ltd’s recent decision to go ahead with the closure of four Post Office branches in Tooting.   He has written to Postwatch, the independent watchdog, demanding an official review of the decision.  

Sadiq has been campaigning to keep all four Post Office branches earmarked for closure, open.  He will continue to put pressure on Wandsworth Council to arrange a rescue package for Tooting's Post Offices.

Sadiq has joined local residents in opposing the current plans to redevelop the Springfield Hospital site.  Hundreds of residents affected by the development have replied to his consultation on the development, the results of which will be published soon.

Sadiq has been campaigning with local residents to get Wandsworth Council and Wandsworth Police to tackle the problem of prostitution in the Balham area.

Sadiq has been campaigning for a new lift at Balham since first being elected in 2005.  He had previously secured investment for the project through the Government’s “Access For All” scheme.  Sadiq recently visited the station to observe the work on the lift which will be open shortly.

Sadiq recently held a skipping competition for primary schools in Tooting.  Sellincourt Primary School was the winner, taking the prize of 1000 Active Kids vouchers which can be exchanged for sports equipment.  Sadiq visited the school to congratulate the winning skippers and present the vouchers to the school. 

 


Over the last fortnight Sadiq has hosted local constituents in the Commons, including having tea on the House of Commons terraces with them. Mrs Riding won the raffle at his Warm Front event in Balham Library.
 


Sadiq also hosted the Joseph family, who won a raffle at Penwortham School. 
 


Sadiq was pleased to invite the Minister of Policing, Rt Hon Tony McNulty, to the Wandsworth Policing Contact Centre to meet local Specials and all the volunteers who do such an amazing job. Since its inception the Contact Centre has gone from strength to strength; silencing doubters and becoming a valuable contact point for the police and local community alike; with over 12,000 visitors it really can be called a great success for community relations in Tooting.
 

 

The 1st Balham and Tooting Scout Group (King of Siam’s Own) celebrated their centenary year with a St Georges Day Parade at St Marks URC.


The Reverend Andrew Fairchild, delivered an inspiring Service, which was both moving and also great fun.

 


The Tiffin Cup - a competition to the find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK is in its third year.  Once again Sadiq ran the Tooting competition, which saw the largest number of nominations from local residents so far, with thousands of votes cast for the many excellent South Asian restaurants in Tooting.  Al Mirage was the deserved winner and will go on to represent Tooting in the rest of the competition. 
 


Ken Livingstone visited Tooting during his Mayoral campaign and got a great reception at the coffee morning Sadiq organised for local residents.  Sadiq and Ken then took a walk up Tooting High Street visiting local businesses and talking to local residents about the issues that concerned them.
 

Sadiq became the first politician to receive a Muslim News Award at an annual ceremony in Park Lane. The Chief Executive of the Crown Prosecution Service presented Sadiq with the award for Excellence in Citizenship. Other winners included the journalist Alan Johnston and prominent doctors, academics and entrepreneurs.         
Sadiq met with the Minister responsible for the Post Office, Pat Mcfadden MP, to discuss his concerns about Post Office Ltd's consultation process and what Wandsworth Council could be doing to support local Post Offices.

Theatre staff at St Georges have expressed some concerns about restructuring taking place and Sadiq was keen to meet staff to listen to and discuss the issue with them. Over one hundred and fifty theatre nurse, technicians and UNISON  at St. George’s Hospital attended the meeting.   
Sadiq meet with a group of year 8 students from Chestnut Grove school for a question and answer session in Parliament. The students asked him about the campaigning he does in Tooting and the work he does in Parliament, before being taken on a guided tour around the House.
Sadiq spoke at the Public meeting held in Tooting in March to discuss Post Office Ltd's proposals to close four Sub-Post Office in Tooting.

Sadiq has presented Post Office Ltd and Postwatch with a detailed submission explaining why the four local Post Offices should remain open. He has also contact Wandsworth Council asking them to allow local Post Offices to perform more public services, like collecting rent and Council Tax and renewing Freedom Passes.

Sadiq held his inaugural Environmental Policy Forum in the House of Commons. The forum was attended by more than 100 local environmental activists, who had the opportunity to put questions to the Minister for Climate Change, Joan Ruddock MP, before discussions were held about what local action could be taken on the issues of sustainable transport, sustainable energy and recycling.

          

Sadiq invited pupils from Garratt Park School to Parliament to meet him and have a professional tour.          
Sadiq met representatives of Oxfam who were running a “Sisters of the Planet” exhibition in the House of Commons. The exhibition was designed to highlight the disproportionate impact climate change is having on women living in poverty.           
Sadiq is campaigning with the Wandsworth Fairtrade Group to achieve Fairtrade status for the Borough.

Sadiq met Douglas Alexander MP, the Secretary of State for International Development, to discuss this campaign which the Secretary of State fully supports.

Sadiq met with representatives of Post Office Ltd to find out more about plans from the Post Office to close down some Sub-Post Offices in Tooting and to discuss his concerns about these as well as the consultation processes. Cllr John Farebrother, who is one of the Labour Councillors in Furzedown and has taken a keen interest in Post Office provision in his ward also attended the meeting.

Sadiq and Tooting Councillor, Nick Bowes, led a successful campaign to get Wandsworth Council to introduce traffic bollards to a busy junction outside Fircroft School.

Without the bollards, cars are able to mount the pavement at the junction, which is a big safety risk to all pedestrians including schoolchildren.

 

         
In response to the news that, after 40 years, the Marks and Spencer’s store in Tooting Town Centre will close in May this year, Sadiq has called on Wandsworth Council to do more to support retailers and attract larger stores to Tooting.

 

       
Sadiq met with the Head of Public Affairs from marks and Spencer UK, Tony Ginty (pictured) to make representations on behalf of local residents and the staff of the Tooting Marls and Spencer branch.

Sadiq met with Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham MP, to discuss plans to expand and strengthen apprenticeship schemes.  

Sadiq and Tooting Councillor, Nick Bowes, have been working with local residents on Broadwater Road on a campaign to make their street one-way.

Residents have suffered from damage to their vehicles and increased traffic congestion since the Council implemented a one-way system in adjoining roads. They collected a petition calling for their part of the street to be included in the system, which they presented to Sadiq and Nick.

      

Sadiq arranged to take Graveney Sixth Form student, Bertie Watkin, to meet the Prime Minister at a special event in Downing street to celebrate the educational achievements of young people.

Sadiq with Wandsworth Councillors, who ran a campaign to refurbish Tooting Library.

The library will receive a complete makeover this year thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

      

Sadiq took part in the opening ceremony of the new midwife-let maternity unit at St George's Hospital.

The unit has been named the Carmen Suite after Carmen Brooks-Johnson (pictured), a midwife at the hospital for more than 30 years, and provides mothers with a comfortable, safe place to deliver their babies without medical intervention.

          

Sadiq signed a special Book of Commitment to honour those killed in the Holocaust and individuals that risked their lives to help those being persecuted, in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day 2008.

Sadiq organised an educational visit to the Houses of Parliament for schoolchildren from Hornsby House Primary.

Before being taken on a tour of the House by professional guides, the children had a question and answer session with Sadiq about his work as an MP.

 
A number of local people have received material from a group calling themselves 'Vigilante', asking for donations to help with their 'war on paedophiles'. Sadiq brought this to the attention of the local police who have now launched a criminal investigation to determine who is distributing the malicious material.

Sadiq invited a group of GCSE Citizenship students from Graveney School in Furzedown to Westminster for a tour of the Houses of Parliament and a question and answer session with him about his work as the local MP.  
Sadiq regularly organises tours of the Houses of Parliament for schools and local people. He can also get public gallery tickets for Tooting residents to attend parliamentary debates, including Prime Minister's Questions.

During December Sadiq has visited all the 9 schools that participated in his Christmas Card Competition this year. He has presented over 900 certificates to the schoolchildren who took part.

St George's Charity donated £500,000 to the refurbishment and the Government invested £1million in two new CT Scans.
