The parliamentary
constituency of Tooting is in South West London in the
Borough of Wandsworth.
Although the constituency is
called Tooting, the area includes several distinct
neighbourhoods – Balham, Earlsfield, Furzedown, Tooting and
Wandsworth Common. The area is well served by the Northern
Line, overland services, and there is a proposed tram link
on the horizon. Tooting also boasts a major hospital, many
excellent restaurants, a prison and several parks. In 2005,
a crater on Mars was named after Tooting.
The population of Tooting is
around 92,000, with a 27.6% ethnic minority background as
reported at the last census in 2001. Tooting is culturally
vibrant place and the mix of different cultures has given it
a distinct landscape.
Wandsworth Council is
Conservative controlled, and there are seven wards in the
Tooting constituency – Bedford, Earlsfield, Furzedown,
Graveney, Nightingale, Tooting and Wandsworth Common. There
are seven Labour councillors spread across these wards, and
you can find out more about Labour Party activities in
Wandsworth on their

Sadiq and Tooting:
I joined
Tooting Labour Party as a 15 year old at Ernest Bevin
Secondary school to get rid of the Thatcher government which
was destroying the lives of so many people.
I became a
Councillor in 1994 to protect Tooting from the Tory policies
of Wandsworth council, and now I am the MP for Tooting I
want to give Tooting a real voice in government and ensure
that our community here in Tooting fully benefits from
Labour policies.
I was born
in Tooting and have stayed because I love Tooting. It is
everything that is best about OUR country- a truly broad
community with people of different backgrounds, races and
cultures. Tooting also has a full spectrum of people with
varying degrees of wealth and prosperity.
My dad
drove the number 44 bus for more than 25 years up and down
Garratt Lane and was based at Wandsworth bus garage before
this was closed down during the Thatcher years. I spent my
early childhood as one of 8 children in a 3 bedroom Council
flat on the Henry Prince estate in Earlsfield.
I know how
much I owe to the teachers of Ernest Bevin School who
encouraged me to go to University. My daughters both
attend Fircroft Primary, which I also
went to as a child and where I have been a Governor for
more than 11 years.
As the MP
for Tooting I aim to continue to have an impact on improving
conditions for all local residents, whether it be fighting
Wandsworth Council cuts in services locally, or working with
a Labour government to deliver such necessities as increased
childcare provision, cleaner hospitals and safer streets.
